The Noble Lie

The Noble Lie ought to be understood
That it is a lie. That George Washington
Cut down a Cherry Tree and never lied;
That Abraham Lincoln travelled miles
To return a halfpenny, or Santa
The Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, so
With the Hero Christopher Columbus
Who was incessant that the world was
Round, or Thomas Edison inventing
The modern world, or that mental woes
Turn up in innocent people. It ought
To be understood these lies are not true.

Yet, men ought to so live like they were true.
George Washington teaches us honesty;
And Abraham Lincoln taught equity'
Santa, the Easter Bunny and Fairy
Teach us that good behavior reward us
Christopher Columbus taught persistence
Thomas Edison teaches us genius
And believing mentally ill people
Are innocent cures them of the ailment.

Yet, we ought to walk knowing these lies;
In school, as young children, it ought to be
Child's play, where then into adulthood
It is understood the things learned as youth
Were the G rated stories we needed.
For, Genocide, Rape, Political lies
Are not things we ought to teach our children.
And as adults, we ought to know what was
True about the Noble Lies we were told.
For, reality ought not be what we
Mimic, but rather the ideal world.
For, who knows? Maybe one day, knowing the
Lie is only a lie, but a noble
Lie, we can live like the lie were true, and
Then build a better state for our children.
