Luther's Theses are--about 75% of them--a rebuke of Indulgences. Which, at that time the Medicis and company had the Papacy, and there was a lot of simony and nepotism, among other problems. It was a dark time for Catholics. Kind of like the same reason Israel and Judah split, Rehoboam didn't have the clout to maintain a unified kingdom.
