The Philosopher

The philosopher, poet, logician,
Theologian, said of his work:
"I have made a mythology of myself;
"I have fully grasped the fundamentals well.
"Math, Logic, Science, God's Law
"I do know."

There came a Romish Priest,
Who coveted the wisdom.
Thus, he pointed at him,
And cried, "Heretic!
"Demoniac! Feckless fool!"
And thus he cried.

He took the Philosopher,
And put him in chains.
And said, "Demonic man
"You have wisdom beyond
"What you can grasp.
"Demonic mind."

The Philosopher explained,
"Day and night, for 5 hours
"Every day and night,
"I studied every subject I could.
"If I have a memory, there it is.
"I am sorry, if I combine things
"Though force of logic."

The Priest cried, "He said enough!
"The man is a Wicked sloth!"
Thus, he threw holy water on him
And kept him bound in wool
Restraints. The philosopher dulled
And his memory started to fade.
He forgot everything.

They took him out of his chains
One day, and the Priest was old
And so was the Philosopher.
The Philosopher's blue eyes
Were blank, and stared.
He did not answer
A word.

The Priest said, "The demon
"Has left him! We are freed!"
Thus, all the Philosopher's
Work belonged to the priest,
So he became a rich man.
The Prophet were poor
Until he died.

Another priest, and exorcist too,
Came to the Philosopher
And said, "I knew you.
"You were a truly righteous son."
Thus, he looked with fiery eyes
At the other priest and cried,
"Demon!"

And thus, they bound the other priest
And put him in a dark cell.
And he was forgotten, his wisdom too,
Yet so was the philosopher's they said.
The Philosopher was brought to the parish
And nuns fed him curds and honey.
He died poor, yet in comfort.
